Review: Akilpo Hostal, Huaraz, Peru

I stayed for three nights at Akilpo Hostal, and as it happened to be my birthday, I treated myself to a private room. You can read about my time in Huaraz here.

Tip: I was offered a discount on the price of a private room as I stayed for three nights. The price decreased from 40 to 35 soles a night, and as the dorms are 15 soles, this is worth bearing mind if there are two of you. For just 5 soles more you have privacy and an en suite bathroom. The double bed was big, the mattress was new and the room was warm.

Breakfast
– not included
+ they have a kitchen

Hot water: yes

Location
+ right next to the central market
– on a busy main road and the traffic is noisy all night long

Lockers
– they don´t fit your own padlock, they already come with keys which you have to leave at reception
– fewer lockers than guests

Price per dorm bed: 15 soles (Hostelworld say 18 soles so book directly with Akilpo. You can find their contact info below)

Security
+ buzzer entry to front door
+ guests are given a key to their dorm door

Welcome: the hostel is run by three brothers who are always smiley and friendly, and are happy to answer any questions. They know their city and the area really well. They told me where to pick up collectivos from and how much I should expect to pay. Also they very kindly bought me a birthday cake!
