Review: Rolando´s Backpacker Hostel, Havana, Cuba

As far as I am aware, Rolando´s is the only hostel in Cuba, so it is one of the few places where you can be sure to meet other travellers. I have stayed here twice and really like the atmosphere and the ideal location.

Breakfast:
– not included
+ can be purchased. It includes eggs, bread, fruit juice, coffee and a bowl of fruit

Hot water: yes

Location
+ in the heart of Centro Havana, perfectly located between Habana Vieja to the east, where you will probably spend most days, and Vedado to the west, where you will find yourself going at night.
+ very near the sea to the north
+ on a quiet street. Neptuno, one block along, is a main artery through Centro so not many cars go down the hostel´s street.

Lockers: yes
+ big enough to fit your rucksack

Price for a dorm bed: 9 CUC if booked directly with the hostel. Contact details below.

Security
+ buzzer entry to front door
+ 24 hour reception
+ guests are given a key to the dorm

Welcome: The owner Magaly and her son Rolando speak English, and all the staff are very helpful. There is a really laid back atmosphere.

Wifi: No, not in budget establishments in Cuba.

Extras: a bar with a very attentive barman called Leo on the roof terrace, with fantastic views of Havana´s rooftops. Much needed air conditioning in the dorms.

Stars: **** I award Rolando´s Backpackers 4 stars

Contact: rolancesar@yahoo.es

Address: 567 San Migel, Entre Gervasio y Belascoain, Centro Habana, Cuba

Tip: When you arrive, ask to go in one of the two dorms nearest the living room as they have en suite bathrooms. The dorm next the front door does not have an en suite so you have to use the communal bathroom in the living room area.

  2. Did they send you a confirmation when you reserved a bed via email? I am having trouble understanding whether or not I am confirmed.
